Day 7 – Dublin, Ireland

Today we docked in Dublin. We left the ship fairly early in the morning and went to Dublin Castle. The building is still in use for their government functions. We were given a tour of the interior and told a lot of information about the furnishings and the uses of each of the rooms we went through. Afterwards, we went over to Trinity College to see the campus and then to go in and view The Book of Kells which is a very old Irish illustrated Bible. The weather started out overcast for the visit to the castle and then turned to plain old rain by the time we arrived at the college. The remainder of the day went from misty to downpours.

After viewing the the Book of Kells, we were on our own for the remainder of the day. Our tour guide had recommended an Irish pub for lunch so we headed to O’Neill’s for lunch. It was a beautiful OLD put on a side street. You went through a cafeteria type line where you chose your meat which was carved off of a big roast then they piled your plate full of 3 kinds of potatoes, green beans, cabbage, carrots, stuffing and topped everything off with a big ladle of gravy – DELICIOUS!!! We also had a Guiness and I tried a Bemish, another Irish beer. Didn’t care for it either but it was fun trying it.

After lunch we headed over to a pedestrian shopping area that was full of outdoor stalls, modern stores, Starbuck, McDonalds, Burger King, and street performers. We headed for St. Patrick’s Cathedral in a heavy downpour. Took pictures of the church and went inside to see the stained glass windows and the crypt. Very interesting and beautiful.

We finished out our day with a drink from Starbucks while we people watched and then did a little shopping. We had purchased tickets for transportation back to the ship and were glad that we did after all the walking we did. Paul took a nap and we actually ended up missing dinner in the dining room and had to go up to the Windjammer to get something to eat.

Tomorrow is Glasgow, Scotland where we are going to be taking a LONG bus ride over to Edinburgh to see the castle.
